The school year has started and, as we already knew, it is not like any previous year. There are so many unexpected demands on our time and our talents. It seems like, for even the most experienced educators among us, any door chosen leads to struggle, frustration, and uncertainty. Yet, we have the keys to unlock valuable treasures that lie within ourselves and our students. You see, what is needed now has always been needed. What is required for virtual teaching is the same thing that has always been needed for in-person teaching. No matter the challenges we have faced, are facing, or may face in the coming months, the assurance to which we can cling is that the purpose of school has not changed.

The purpose of school has always been and continues to be the intentional discovery, development, and demonstration of the key social-emotional learning (SEL) skills our students need to unlock and empower their passion for lifelong learning.

When the traditional structures are disrupted and antiquated systems fail, we must refocus on our purpose. Our students’ passion for learning is driven by their innate curiosity, initiative, and empathy, inspired by their innate creativity and enthusiasm, motivated by their innate focus, effort, and dependability, and empowered by their innate confidence and resilience. Our students are driven by the exploration of their own social, emotional, and academic learning and growth. These essential SEL skills are key in healthy, authentic, and holistic lifelong learning.
